Genesis 17:9-14, 22-27 - Things Not as They Seem

Comments

I have been thinking about and returning over and over to this lesson in my mind. Seems like it's 'popping up' frequently (I guess I had better pay closer attention!).

Yesterday, we read these verses in Jeremiah (9:25 & 26) - "The days are coming," declares the Lord, "when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh--Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab and all who live in the desert in distant places. For all these nations are really uncircumcised, and even the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart."

Israel could be a type and picture, as Ken says, of the Church. How often do we appear outwardly to be Christian, but then don't deal with the sin in our hearts? We may be able to fool other people, but we can never fool God.

This lesson also gave me a slightly different perspective on the unbelieving world. So often I want to point my finger and shake my fist at all the evil happening around me, but it's no wonder unbelievers behave just as the Bible says they will! I can try to affect change in laws or policy (and I should), but true and lasting change only comes when there is a change of heart. This can only truly be achieved when God's Spirit takes up residence in us and begins His sanctifying work. I guess what I'm seeing is that I should not be satisfied with behavior modification, I should pray for salvation and sanctification.
